Where indoor toxicity actually lives
Most of what makes a home comfortable also off-gases. Polyurethane foam in sofas and chairs. PFAS stain and water-resistance treatments on rugs and upholstery. Synthetic fragrance in cleaning products. Paraffin wax in candles. The exposure is not dramatic or single-event. It is chronic and low-level, which makes it harder to attribute and easier to ignore.
The products on this page passed the same disqualifier screen applied to every item in this directory: no PFAS, no chemical flame retardants, no PVC, no undisclosed fragrance, no formaldehyde-releasing adhesives or resins, no polyester in primary sleep or skin-contact materials. What we look for
Sofas and upholstered furniture. The entire question here is flame retardants. California's TB117-2013 standard can be met without chemicals if a brand uses an inherent fire barrier (wool batting) instead of chemical treatment. Brands that use GOLS-certified natural latex foam and GOTS organic wool batting can meet the standard without any added chemistry. Avoid CertiPUR-US as a standalone credential: it tests for VOCs and a handful of heavy metals, but does not fully address chemical flame retardants.
Rugs. Natural fiber rugs (jute, wool, sisal, cotton) sidestep the main risk categories: PFAS treatments and synthetic latex or polypropylene backing. The backing matters as much as the fiber. A jute or wool rug on a coated mesh backing can reintroduce the same compounds you are trying to avoid.
Candles and air care. The wax itself is the gating question. Paraffin releases benzene and toluene when burned. Synthetic fragrance compounds can carry phthalates and undisclosed VOCs. Beeswax and organic coconut wax pass; named essential oils pass; "fragrance" listed as an ingredient without constituents fails the screen.
Cleaning and laundry. Surfactant disclosure is the gate. A brand that lists "surfactant" without naming it fails. We also check against quats, optical brighteners, MIT/CMIT preservatives, and synthetic fragrance. EWG Verified is a useful but not sufficient signal; we read the full ingredient list.
Air purifiers. HEPA filtration is the floor. For VOC removal (off-gassing from furniture, finishes, and cleaning residue), an activated carbon stage is required. Units that claim "purification" via ionization or UV without mechanical filtration are not on the list regardless of certification language.
Bed frames. Solid hardwood or softwood construction with a disclosed finish. GREENGUARD Gold certifies the off-gassing characteristics of the finished piece under elevated-humidity occupied-room conditions. It is the right additional signal for a sleeping surface. It does not substitute for material disclosure of what the frame is built from.

What we passed on
Paraffin and synthetic-fragrance candles. Paraffin is a petroleum distillate that releases benzene and toluene when burned. Most "scented soy" candles are primarily paraffin, with soy as a minority component added to the marketing. Synthetic fragrance oils add phthalate risk on top of that. A soy label without ingredient disclosure does not pass the screen.
PFAS-treated rugs. Stain-resistant and performance rug treatments are still standard practice at most mid-range brands. The treatments are invisible and often undisclosed, applied at the fiber or backing level. We did not find brands outside the picks above that could document a clean material chain for both fiber and backing.
CertiPUR-US-only sofas. CertiPUR-US tests polyurethane foam for VOCs and a restricted list of heavy metals and ozone depleters. It is a legitimate certification for those categories. It does not test for all chemical flame retardants, and it does not address polyurethane foam as a petroleum-derived material with a long off-gassing life. Several popular brands cite CertiPUR-US as their non-toxic credential while using phosphate-based or chlorinated flame retardants in the FR barrier layer.

What is GREENGUARD Gold and what does it actually certify?
GREENGUARD Gold (formerly GREENGUARD Children and Schools) is a third-party certification from UL Environment that tests finished products for VOC off-gassing. Testing simulates occupied-room conditions at elevated temperature and humidity, and the limits are stricter than the base GREENGUARD standard. For furniture and building materials in sleeping or children's spaces, it is the relevant standard to look for. What it does not certify: the underlying material composition. A sofa can carry GREENGUARD Gold and still have a chemical flame retardant barrier inside it. A bed frame can carry GREENGUARD Gold while built from MDF with a urea-formaldehyde binder, if the surface off-gassing rate on the finished piece stays below the threshold. Use GREENGUARD Gold as confirmation that a product does not off-gas problematically at the surface; use material disclosure and the disqualifier screen to confirm what it is actually built from.
What is polyurethane foam and why does this site screen it out?
Polyurethane foam is a petroleum-derived synthetic polymer used as the cushion fill in most conventional sofas, chairs, and mattresses. It is inexpensive and uniformly consistent, which is why it dominates the market. The problem is the treatment chain around it: foam is highly flammable, so manufacturers add chemical flame retardants at the foam stage, the barrier layer, or both. These compounds (historically polybrominated diphenyl ethers, more recently organophosphates and chlorinated tris) off-gas over the foam's lifetime and accumulate in household dust. The alternative is GOLS-certified natural latex, a processed form of rubber-tree sap that is less flammable and can meet fire standards in combination with a wool batting barrier without any chemical additive.
How do I know if a sofa has chemical flame retardants?
The label inside a conventional US sofa discloses fire-safety compliance but not the chemistry used to achieve it. The only reliable path is asking the brand directly for the FR disclosure, or buying from a brand that proactively discloses a chemical-FR-free build. Brands that cite TB117-2013 compliance alongside a specific non-chemical fire barrier (wool batting, Kevlar, inherent-FR fiber) and can verify it through GOTS or a comparable certification are the ones on this list. "No added flame retardants" language in marketing copy, without a disclosed barrier material, is not sufficient.
Do air purifiers remove chemicals from cleaning products and furniture off-gassing?
HEPA-only units remove particulates but are not effective against gases and VOCs. For chemical removal, you need an activated carbon stage. Activated carbon adsorbs VOC molecules (benzene, toluene, formaldehyde, and similar compounds) through physical bonding. The effectiveness depends on the carbon quantity and the contact time.
