The first question most parents ask about baby clothing is not style or fit. It is whether the fabric is safe to be next to skin that absorbs everything, for twenty hours a day. The answer depends on what the clothing is actually made of, which most brands make surprisingly hard to find out.
Organic cotton solves the chemistry problem at the fiber stage. The crop is grown without synthetic pesticides, and the yarn is processed without chlorine bleaches, azo dyes, or formaldehyde-based wrinkle treatments. But organic printed on a hang tag is not the same as GOTS certification.
Verified"Made with organic cotton" is not GOTS certification. One means the fiber was organic at the farm. The other means the full chain from field to sewn garment was audited against a published standard with a traceable certificate.
What we look for
GOTS certification is the starting point. Every garment here carries a verified GOTS certificate traceable to the issuing authority, with a certificate number and issuing body. A brand claiming GOTS without a verifiable certificate does not pass. Neither does a brand that says made with organic cotton without a chain-of-custody cert covering every step from mill to sewn garment.
GOTS is not the only piece. The standard's social criteria require safe labor conditions and prohibit child labor. Its chemical chapter prohibits azo dyes that cleave to restricted arylamines, formaldehyde-based wrinkle treatments, heavy metals in dyes, conventional bleaching, and flame retardants. A GOTS garment has already been cleared for all of these.
For sleepwear in particular, there is a second regulatory layer: CPSC flammability rules. Tight-fitting sleepwear, which fits close to the body and limits oxygen to flames, is exempt from chemical flame retardant requirements. Every pick here is sold as tight-fitting daywear or sleepwear under the correct CPSC designation for organic cotton garments that cannot be chemically treated.
Certifications beyond GOTS worth noting: Fair Trade covers labor conditions and living wages, audited separately from GOTS. IVN BEST is a German natural textile standard stricter than GOTS on synthetic dyes and heavy metal limits. Demeter Biodynamic, for the cotton crop itself, is the strictest agricultural standard. When a garment stacks multiple certs, it narrows the universe of what could be in it.
Trims and hardware matter as much as fabric. Snaps on infant garments should be nickel-free. GOTS permits up to 5% conventional synthetic fiber in labeled organic products; for trims like elastic and thread, that allowance covers the expected use.
