PFAS Markers Found in 58% of Children's Textiles Tested, Study Finds

A Silent Spring Institute study found PFAS chemical markers in 58% of 93 children's textiles tested. Products labeled water-resistant showed the highest detection rates — the same label that defines most waterproof bibs, sleep sacks, and changing pad covers.

A 2022 peer-reviewed study found detectable PFAS chemical markers in 58 percent of 93 children's textiles tested — and nearly all positive results came from products marketed as "water-resistant" or "stain-resistant." Products labeled "green" or "nontoxic" that also carried a water-resistance claim showed the same contamination profile.

The study

The findings are from "How Well Do Product Labels Indicate the Presence of PFAS in Consumer Items Used by Children and Adolescents?," published May 17, 2022 in Environmental Science & Technology by researchers at the Silent Spring Institute and Boston University School of Public Health. Researchers screened 93 products — children's bedding, clothing, and upholstered furniture — for total fluorine, the standard chemical proxy for PFAS presence. Of the 93 items, 54 (58%) tested positive. When the team followed up by testing the water-resistant subset for 36 specific PFAS compounds, those chemicals were confirmed in that subset. A 2026 study in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology added a separate data point: PFAS were detected in all 18 stuffed toys tested, with measurable migration into artificial saliva at concentrations relevant to infant oral exposure.

What PFAS are and why the water-resistance claim matters

PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are a class of several thousand synthetic chemicals used to make surfaces resist water, oil, and stains. They break down extremely slowly in the environment and accumulate in the body over time, which is why they're called "forever chemicals." In children, PFAS exposure has been linked to disrupted immune function, altered thyroid hormone levels, and effects on growth and development at higher exposures.

What Rodgers et al. makes clear is that fluorine screening catches PFAS that product labels don't disclose. A "nontoxic" label applied alongside a "water-resistant" claim was no guarantee of PFAS-free chemistry. The signal that predicted contamination was the performance claim, not the wellness label.

Where these products live in a typical nursery

The study's product categories — children's bedding, clothing, and upholstered furniture — map directly to the nursery. Crib-sized sheets and mattress protectors were among the items specifically tested. One waterproof bib in the sample returned 201 ppm fluorine — a clear positive result.

The same treatment pathway drives the risk profile for changing pad covers with waterproof shells, sleep sacks with water-resistant outer layers, stroller canopy fabrics, and waterproof bibs. Any children's textile with a water-resistance function — regardless of its other label claims — should be treated as potentially PFAS-positive until the manufacturer specifically names the water-resistance chemistry.

What to look for instead

Wool is naturally water-resistant. So is wax-coated cotton canvas. Polyurethane laminate (PUL), common in changing pad covers and cloth diaper shells, is a polymer — but when a brand discloses that its PUL is PFAS-free and names the plasticizer used, that's a different class of risk than an undisclosed fluoropolymer treatment. The distinction is chemistry transparency, not avoiding waterproofing entirely.
