How baby skin is different — and why it matters

The outer layer of your baby's skin — the stratum corneum — is roughly 30 percent thinner than an adult's and still developing through the first year of life. It loses water faster (a higher transepidermal water loss rate), and its barrier function is less consistent. Add in a surface-area-to-body-weight ratio roughly three times higher than an adult's, and the same amount of a product covers more skin and can be absorbed at a higher rate per kilogram of body weight.

None of this makes baby skin inherently fragile. But ingredients applied daily for the first several years of life deserve more scrutiny than the same ingredient in a once-weekly adult product.

The five ingredients worth avoiding

Parabens. Propyl and butylparaben are classified as endocrine disruptors. The EU restricts them in products used on children under three and prohibits them in the diaper area entirely. Methylparaben sits at a lower concern level, but given how many baby products most parents use at once, reducing cumulative exposure is reasonable. Skip all of them.

Phenoxyethanol. A paraben replacement that shows up in many 'natural' brands. The EU restricts it to 1% maximum in leave-on products for children under three in the diaper area. It's common in wipes, lotions, and wash products — worth checking the label regardless of how the front of the packaging reads.

Fragrance / parfum. One ingredient entry can represent hundreds of undisclosed compounds. Fragrance is a leading contact sensitizer in personal care products. For babies, the calculation is straightforward: no benefit, real sensitization risk. Skip it entirely. Our explainer on fragrance-free labeling covers the label traps in more depth.

Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, imidazolidinyl urea, and diazolidinyl urea all slowly release formaldehyde as they break down inside a product. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen (IARC Group 1). These show up in baby shampoos, lotions, and wipes — products used daily over years.

PEG compounds. Polyethylene glycols act as penetration enhancers, driving other ingredients deeper into skin. They can also be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane — a probable human carcinogen (IARC Group 2B) — as a byproduct of their manufacturing process. Look for any ingredient name starting with PEG- or ending in -eth (such as sodium laureth sulfate).

What certifications actually verify

EWG Verified is the most rigorous personal care certification for ingredient screening. It prohibits more than 1,500 chemicals, requires full disclosure of every ingredient in a formula, and allows no undisclosed fragrance. An EWG Verified baby product has been checked against every ingredient concern listed above.

MADE SAFE adds a bioaccumulation lens — it looks at whether ingredients accumulate in tissue over time, not only acute toxicity. A good complement to EWG Verified when you're choosing between options.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a textiles certification. It covers fabrics, batting, and thread dyes. It does not apply to personal care formulas. A baby lotion carrying an OEKO-TEX badge is a marketing mismatch — the standard does not cover what's in the bottle.

What to do

Read the ingredient list, not the front-of-label claims. Scan for parabens, phenoxyethanol, fragrance, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, and PEG compounds. When a product discloses every ingredient and none of them appear on that list, that's the one worth buying.
