What makes a textile safe to sleep on, wear against your skin, or wrap around an infant? One widely-used answer comes from a Swiss certification called OEKO-TEX Standard 100. It tests finished textile products for harmful chemical residues and sets limits for more than 100 substances. When you see the label, it means the fabric passed those tests — it doesn't mean the cotton was organically grown, or that the factory treated its workers fairly. That distinction matters, especially when you're shopping for a baby.
What gets tested
The testing covers substances that show up in textiles as farming residues, processing chemicals, or finishing treatments:
Pesticide residues. Natural fibers like cotton and wool accumulate pesticide treatments from agriculture. The standard sets maximum residue limits for dozens of compounds including organochlorines, organophosphates, and pyrethroids.
Heavy metals. Cadmium, lead, arsenic, antimony, mercury, and chromium(VI) can enter textiles through pigments, mordants, and industrial dye processes. All are tested, with tighter limits for products that contact skin directly.
Formaldehyde. Used as a wrinkle-resistance and easy-care treatment on cotton and blended fabrics. The standard sets strict limits — no detectable formaldehyde is permitted for infant products.
Azo dyes and allergenic dyes. Certain azo dyes break down under normal use into carcinogenic aromatic amines. The standard tests for both the parent dyes and 24 regulated breakdown products. Contact-allergy-causing disperse dyes are separately screened.
pH level. Skin has a natural acidity. Extreme pH causes irritation. Certified textiles fall within a range close to skin's own.
PFAS and water repellents. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, used in stain-resistant and water-repellent textile finishes, are tested and limited.
Biocides. Odor-control and pest-resistance treatments (triclosan, permethrin) are limited or prohibited.
Chlorinated phenols and solvents. Industrial chemicals that can persist as processing residues.
Optical brighteners. Fluorescent whitening agents applied during finishing; tested for migration to skin.
Color fastness. The standard also verifies that dyes don't rub off onto skin under simulated perspiration and friction — not a chemical residue test, but a performance standard tied to skin contact.
The four product classes
The certification splits products into four classes based on proximity to skin and the age of the intended wearer. As products get closer to infant bodies, the limits tighten.
Class I — Infant and toddler products
All products for children under 36 months: onesies, pajamas, bibs, crib sheets, sleep sacks, swaddles, baby blankets, plush toys.
This is the strictest class. Formaldehyde must not be detectable at all. Heavy metal and pesticide limits are significantly tighter than for adult products. The reasoning: infants put textiles in their mouths, their skin-barrier function is less developed than adults', and their body weight relative to surface area means higher exposure per kilogram of body weight. The same fabric that qualifies as Class II for adult use must meet Class I requirements to be certified for an infant.
Class II — Direct skin contact (adults and children over 36 months)
Products worn against or lying on bare skin: underwear, T-shirts, bed sheets, bath towels, mattress covers, leggings.
Limits are less restrictive than Class I but remain meaningful for the substances that matter most at the skin-contact interface. Most adult bedding and everyday clothing falls here.
Class III — No direct skin contact
Products worn over other clothing or used where skin contact is indirect: outer jackets, insulating fill, liners, curtains, upholstery fabric.
Testing limits relax further because the primary skin-contact pathway is removed. These products still pass the full substance screen — the limits reflect the actual exposure scenario.
Class IV — Decoration and furnishings
Products with minimal human contact: carpets, floor coverings, wall textiles.
Still certified against the full test panel. Limits reflect the fact that you walk on them with shoes, not sleep on them.
How to verify a certificate
Every certified product carries a 16-digit license number on its label. You can enter that number into the OEKO-TEX label check tool to see which accredited laboratory ran the tests, what product the certificate covers, and when it expires.
Annual renewal is required. A certificate from 2022 may not reflect a reformulation that happened in 2023. If the expiry shown in the lookup is in the past, the brand is displaying an outdated label — the current product has not been re-verified.
What OEKO-TEX Standard 100 does not cover
"OEKO-TEX certified" is not the same as "organic."
Fiber origin. The certification makes no claim about whether the cotton was grown organically or conventionally. Testing happens on the finished product — after dyeing, finishing, and processing — not at the farm. A fabric that absorbed pesticides during farming can still carry a Standard 100 label if those pesticides washed out during processing. Whether you care about the farming footprint is a separate question from whether the finished textile poses a residue risk.
Manufacturing practices. Workers' wages, factory wastewater discharge, energy use, and chemical waste handling are outside scope. The certification audits the product, not the supply chain. A brand can carry Standard 100 while operating factories with poor labor conditions.
Environmental impact. Textile dyeing and finishing is chemically intensive. Standard 100 tests what ended up in the finished fabric — not what left the factory in wastewater.
Product performance. The certification does not mean a towel absorbs well, a blanket is durable, or a mattress cover breathes.
When Standard 100 is enough — and when to want more
For most adults buying bedding, towels, or clothing, a Class II OEKO-TEX Standard 100 label is a meaningful signal: the textile was tested and cleared limits on a long list of harmful substances. It doesn't tell you everything, but it tells you something real.
When to look for GOTS alongside it — or instead:
- You're buying for an infant and want assurance about both chemical residues (what Standard 100 covers) and organic fiber sourcing and factory environmental standards (what GOTS adds).
- You care about how the cotton was grown and how the factory handled its dye wastewater.
- You want labor-standard verification in the supply chain.
In practice, many GOTS-certified products also carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100, because clearing the more demanding GOTS bar typically clears the residue testing bar too. The reverse isn't true: Standard 100 alone says nothing about farming or factory practices.
When MADE SAFE fits: MADE SAFE takes a broader ingredient-safety approach across product categories. For textiles it's less common than GOTS or Standard 100, but some baby clothing brands carry it as a third layer of verification.
The practical read for infant purchases: stack certifications where you can. Class I Standard 100 for residue testing combined with GOTS for fiber origin and factory standards covers most of the material risk profile.
