Laundry detergent sheets look like a clean swap. No plastic jug, no heavy shipping weight, no measuring cup. The pitch is persuasive: a small sheet dissolves in the wash drum, releases surfactants, and leaves no packaging behind. But the "leaves nothing behind" claim is becoming harder to defend as independent researchers take a closer look at polyvinyl alcohol, the film that makes sheets work.

What PVA is and why sheets use it
Polyvinyl alcohol (also written PVOH) is a water-soluble synthetic polymer. When a laundry sheet hits the wash water, the PVA film dissolves and releases the surfactants inside. That dissolution is the functional core of the product: no single-use plastic packaging survives the cycle.
PVA has been used in detergent capsules and pods for decades. Sheets are a newer form factor with the same chemistry. The polymer is derived from polyvinyl acetate through hydrolysis, which makes it structurally distinct from polyethylene or polypropylene microplastics. Manufacturers describe it as biodegradable, citing studies showing that microorganisms can break it down under the right conditions.
The question is whether "under the right conditions" describes what happens inside real municipal wastewater treatment systems.
The ASU study: what the researchers found
In 2021, environmental scientists Charles Rolsky and Varun Kelkar at Arizona State University published findings showing that a significant fraction of PVA from consumer products survives conventional wastewater treatment and enters receiving waters. Their work found that roughly 75% of PVA tested passed through treatment plants intact under the conditions studied.
The study does not claim PVA is identical in ecological hazard to polyethylene microbeads. It claims PVA is not being fully processed by the infrastructure we have, and that released polymer accumulates in sediment and may be taken up by aquatic organisms. Those are different claims with different implications.
What industry says in response
The American Cleaning Institute (ACI), Procter and Gamble, and the International PVA Coalition have responded to the ASU findings with substantive methodological objections. Their core counter-arguments:
The test conditions were not representative. The ASU study used incubation periods and inocula that industry argues do not reflect the extended aerobic and anaerobic conditions present in real treatment systems and receiving waters. Studies commissioned by manufacturers using OECD 301 and 302 protocols (longer timeframes, different microbial communities) show substantially higher PVA degradation rates.
PVA is not plastic in the regulatory or structural sense. The polymer backbone and degradation pathway differ from polyolefin microplastics. Industry argues that conflating PVA with conventional microplastics obscures meaningful chemical distinctions.
Real-world treated effluent data. Procter and Gamble has published monitoring data showing PVA concentrations in treated effluent at levels they characterize as environmentally non-significant, and point to decades of use in pharmaceutical capsules without documented ecological harm at scale.
These are substantive objections, not dismissals. The honest read is that this science is unsettled, with competing datasets and genuinely contested definitions.
The EU exemption: provisional, not a clearance
In January 2023, the European Chemicals Agency finalized restrictions on intentionally added microplastics under REACH. The regulation included an explicit exemption for water-soluble polymers, including PVA. The stated rationale: polymers that dissolve in water present a different risk profile than solid persistent particles.
A December 2025 report noted the exemption for water-soluble polymers remains under active evaluation and that monitoring requirements are expected to develop as the broader microplastics regulatory framework matures. The exemption reflects regulatory caution about expanding a rule into contested scientific territory. It is not a scientific endorsement of PVA's environmental safety.
PFAS in detergent sheets: a separate concern
In 2023, Mamavation partnered with an EPA-certified laboratory to test four laundry sheet brands for total organic fluorine, a screening marker for PFAS compounds. The results:

- ECOS: 26 ppm
- Earth Breeze: 14 ppm
- TruEarth: non-detect
Three of four brands exceeded 10 ppm, the threshold Mamavation used to flag potential PFAS presence. Total organic fluorine screening does not identify specific PFAS compounds or confirm intentional addition; elevated readings can originate from manufacturing contamination or fluorinated processing aids. But for a product category whose competitive position rests on ingredient transparency, the results are worth noting.
This is a distinct issue from PVA biodegradability. A sheet brand can have a PVA concern, a PFAS concern, both, or neither. They require separate questions.
EWG Verified: what it covers and what it does not
Some laundry sheet brands carry EWG Verified status. The program evaluates products against EWG's ingredient standards: no ingredients on EWG's restricted lists, full ingredient disclosure, and no restricted manufacturing contaminants.
EWG Verified does not currently require disclosure of all fragrance constituents beyond certain restricted aromatic compounds. A product can carry the EWG Verified mark and still list "fragrance" as an ingredient without disclosing the specific aromatic compounds in that blend. For readers who want to avoid undisclosed fragrance, EWG Verified alone is not a complete signal on that point.
Fragrance: the clearer avoidable
Regardless of how the PVA biodegradability question eventually resolves, undisclosed fragrance in laundry products is a more settled concern. "Fragrance" or "parfum" as a listed ingredient can cover dozens of synthetic aromatic compounds, including some with skin sensitization profiles and some under investigation as endocrine disruptors. The concentration and specific compounds vary widely across formulations.
