Wool blankets differ more than the product page suggests. Fiber type, micron count, certifications, and care all shape what you're actually buying. Here's what to evaluate.

The Variables That Actually Matter

Wool blankets look alike on a product page. A "merino wool throw" and a "lambswool blanket" sit at the same price point, photographed on the same linen sofa. But the fiber inside is doing completely different work — against your skin, in your washing machine, and on the land where it was raised. Here's what actually matters when you're choosing one.

Wool Type

The fiber you choose sets the ceiling for softness, durability, and price.

Merino is the benchmark for next-to-skin comfort. Fiber diameter runs 18–24 microns — fine enough that most people notice no prickling at all. It's the obvious choice for blankets that double as a wrap or go against bare skin. The tradeoff: Merino is relatively delicate. High-pile Merino throws pill faster under friction than coarser wools.

Lambswool — the first shearing from a young sheep — runs 25–30 microns and is a practical all-rounder. Soft enough for most people, durable enough to last decades, and available at lower price points than Merino. It's the default choice for a traditional wool blanket.

Shetland is coarser still, with a characteristic texture that some people love and others won't tolerate against bare skin. It's built for outdoor use, heavy layering, and longevity. If you want something that will outlast you, Shetland is worth serious consideration.

Cashmere comes from the downy undercoat of cashmere goats. Fiber diameter is comparable to fine Merino (15–19 microns), with a distinctively buttery hand. It's also expensive, relatively fragile, and carries its own environmental concerns (more on that below). A cashmere blanket is a luxury purchase; treat it accordingly.

Churro/Navajo wool is a heavy, long-staple fiber from Churra-breed sheep, historically central to Navajo weaving traditions. It's coarse by modern standards — not next-to-skin material — but extraordinarily durable, moisture-resistant, and warm. These blankets are usually significant purchases, often from Indigenous artisan weavers.

What Drives Softness

Softness comes from three places: fiber diameter, processing method, and finishing.

Fiber diameter is the most important variable, measured in microns (μm). Smaller is softer. Merino at 18μm will feel dramatically different from lambswool at 28μm to most people. Many premium brands publish micron counts; if a label just says "Merino" without specifying, you're buying somewhere in that 18–24μm range.

Processing shapes the fiber before weaving. Combed wool (worsted) removes short fibers and aligns the rest, producing a smoother, denser fabric. Carded wool retains more variation and produces a loftier, fluffier hand — often softer-feeling initially, but more prone to pilling over time.

Finishing is the last step. Brushed or napped finishes raise the fiber surface, adding softness. If you're buying from a spec sheet without touching the product, look for combed/worsted construction and any mention of brushed finishing.

Eco-Friendliness: Certifications That Hold Up

Three certifications carry real weight:

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) covers the full production chain — organic farming, processing, and manufacturing. It's the standard to look for if the organic agriculture question matters to you.

RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) focuses specifically on land stewardship and flock welfare, not organic farming per se. Many blankets carry GOTS + RWS, which is a strong combined signal.

Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certifies that the finished textile has been tested and found free of harmful substances — but it says nothing about how the fiber was farmed or processed upstream. It's a useful floor, not a ceiling.

"Natural fiber" and "sustainably sourced" without certification are marketing claims. Treat them accordingly.

Animal Welfare

Mulesing is a surgical procedure used on Merino sheep in some regions (primarily Australia) to prevent fly strike. It's painful and contested. The RWS certification requires farms to have a mulesing phase-out plan or document the use of alternatives; many brands now explicitly source non-mulesed Merino. If this matters to you, look for explicit non-mulesed sourcing or RWS certification — not just a vague welfare claim on the product page.

Cashmere has a separate issue: overgrazing by cashmere goat herds in Inner Mongolia and neighboring regions has contributed to serious desertification of grasslands. Certified sustainable cashmere programs exist — look for SFA (Sustainable Fibre Alliance) certification — but the category remains harder to vet than wool. Budget cashmere is rarely produced with land stewardship in mind.

Price: What You're Actually Paying For

In rough order of impact: fiber type, country of manufacture, and weave complexity.

Fiber is the biggest driver. Cashmere is expensive because the yield per animal is tiny. Fine Merino costs more than lambswool. Churro/Navajo blankets command premium prices that reflect artisan labor and cultural heritage — not just fiber cost.

Country of manufacture matters because labor costs vary widely. Blankets woven in Ireland, Portugal, Scotland, or the US carry higher manufacturing costs than those made in China or India; that difference shows up in retail price. Quality isn't determined by country of origin — excellent blankets come from both.

Weave complexity adds cost. A plain weave blanket is simpler to produce than a herringbone, and both are simpler than a jacquard pattern. If two blankets have similar fiber specs but very different prices, check the construction.

Rough tiers: a solid lambswool throw from a known mill runs $80–$180. Merino sits $120–$300. Cashmere starts around $250 and climbs steeply. Artisan and heritage blankets (Pendleton, Navajo-made) vary widely by maker.

Care

Wool's lanolin content gives it natural antibacterial and moisture-wicking properties. A wool blanket aired outdoors for a few hours after use will often refresh itself without washing — this isn't marketing language, it's how lanolin behaves biochemically.

When you do wash: cold water, wool-specific detergent, and either hand wash or a gentle machine cycle with a wool setting. Lay flat to dry. What ruins a wool blanket: hot water (causes felting), mechanical agitation on a standard cycle (also felting), and tumble drying (both felting and fiber damage). Dry clean is the safest path for cashmere or finely finished Merino; most lambswool and Shetland blankets can be hand washed reliably.

Weight and Warmth

GSM (grams per square meter) is the practical proxy for warmth. A lightweight throw runs 200–350 GSM. A substantial blanket is 400–600 GSM. Above 600 is heavy — traditional Pendleton territory, suited for cold bedrooms or outdoor use.

Single-weave blankets are lighter and breathe more; double-weave blankets trap more air and are significantly warmer. For a primary bed blanket in a cold climate, look for double-weave construction in the 500+ GSM range. For a sofa throw or layering piece, a single-weave 300 GSM will work across most of the year.

Where to Start

Fiber type and certifications will narrow the field faster than anything else. Get those two variables right and you've already ruled out most of the blankets that won't serve you well.
