## The question that keeps resurfacing

Every few months, a new wave of concern hits social media. Someone finds their grandmother's Butterfly Gold Corelle set at a thrift store, runs a search, and lands on a decade's worth of test results showing lead levels in the tens of thousands of parts per million. The same happens with vintage Fiestaware: those bright orange and red plates that look cheerful in a farmhouse kitchen turn out to have a complicated chemical history.

The anxiety is real and the underlying facts are real. But the full picture is more specific than the viral version, and the risk calculus depends on which dishes you have, how old they are, and what condition they are in.

## How lead and cadmium get into dishes

Lead and cadmium enter ceramic and glass tableware through two routes: glazes and decorative decals.

**Glazes** are the glassy coatings fired onto ceramic surfaces. Before roughly the mid-1980s, lead oxide was commonly used in glaze formulations worldwide. It lowers the melting point of the glaze, improves flow, and produces a bright, smooth surface. Ceramic chemistry without lead requires higher temperatures and more careful control, which is why most manufacturers only made the shift when regulators pushed them to.

**Decorative decals** are where the problem gets more concentrated. The colored patterns applied to dinnerware contain metal oxides as colorants. Lead was used widely as a flux in these decals to help them bond to the underlying glass or glaze at lower temperatures. Cadmium compounds produce the vivid red, orange, and yellow hues that other pigments cannot easily match.

The key distinction is location. A clear, unpatterned glaze on the food-contact surface of a bowl is different from a colored decorative pattern on the exterior rim. Lead and cadmium in exterior decals that never contact food present a lower practical exposure risk than those on interior food surfaces, though they still pose a concern during handling, particularly for small children.

## Decorated Corelle before 2005

Corelle is a brand of glass-ceramic dinnerware made by World Kitchen, now part of Corelle Brands. Its base material, Vitrelle glass, is essentially lead-free. The problem is not the glass itself; it is the colored decoration fired onto the surface.

In December 2019, Corelle responded to consumer inquiries by stating that "all our products have been Lead free since the mid-2000s" and recommended that customers use pre-2005 decorated pieces "only as decorative pieces." That statement was the result of persistent pressure from Tamara Rubin, a Portland-based consumer advocate who operates the Lead Safe Mama website and has tested thousands of consumer goods with an XRF device since around 2009.

Rubin's published test results for vintage Corelle patterns are stark. Spice of Life tested at 42,900 ppm lead; Butterfly Gold at 18,700 ppm; Old Town Blue at 18,200 ppm; and Spring Blossom Green (also marketed as Crazy Daisy) at 15,200 ppm. For context, the Consumer Product Safety Commission considers 90 ppm lead in surface coatings hazardous for children's products. The patterns above test at 150 to 500 times that threshold.

Those numbers come from XRF testing, which measures total metal content in the surface material rather than what leaches into food. The FDA sets limits on leachable lead (the amount that migrates from the dish into acidic food), and Corelle's position is that even pre-2005 dishes may not exceed leachable limits under normal use. The problem is wear. As the pattern chips, scratches, or fades, the lead-containing decal breaks down and the pathway to food exposure widens. A pristine 1975 Butterfly Gold plate stored in a cabinet is different from a heavily worn set used daily for 40 years.

**Plain white Corelle with no exterior decoration** is a different case. Testing consistently shows undecorated Corelle, both vintage and modern, to be free of detectable lead and cadmium. If you have plain white pieces and cannot tell the production date, check the surface: decorated patterns are the risk factor, not the glass substrate.

The patterns most commonly identified in test results as high-lead are from the 1970s and early 1980s: Butterfly Gold, Spring Blossom Green, Woodland Brown, Old Town Blue, Snowflake Blue, and Spice of Life.

## Vintage Fiestaware

Fiestaware is a line of vitrified china first produced by Homer Laughlin China Company (now Fiesta Tableware Company) in 1936. Its history divides into three distinct eras from a safety standpoint.

**1936 to 1943, and 1959 to 1972 (uranium era).** The original red glaze and certain other colors used uranium oxide as a colorant. This is not a trace contaminant: uranium represented up to 14 percent of glaze weight on some pieces. The resulting radiation levels are low by occupational standards but detectable with a Geiger counter. Homer Laughlin stopped using uranium after the Atomic Energy Commission claimed the supply for weapons production in 1943, then resumed it briefly in the late 1950s before stopping for good in 1972.

**1972 to 1986 (cadmium era).** After uranium was removed, the vivid color palette required alternative chemistry. Cadmium sulfide and cadmium selenide compounds produce the reliable, heat-stable reds, oranges, and yellows that other pigments cannot replicate. Pieces from this period show high XRF readings for cadmium on bright-colored surfaces, with some independent tests finding cadmium readings above 200 ppm on vintage orange and yellow pieces. Cadmium is a nephrotoxin and a known carcinogen.

**1986 to present (reformulated production).** Homer Laughlin reformulated Fiestaware's glazes in 1986, removing cadmium from the palette. Contemporary Fiestaware is tested to meet FDA leachable limits, and the company states that current production averages cadmium release below 0.02 ppm. The company markets its dinnerware as "lead safe," a specific and deliberate term: it means leachable levels comply with regulatory limits, not that the glaze contains zero detectable lead.

California Prop 65 thresholds for cadmium are 4 to 13 times stricter than federal FDA limits. Some contemporary Fiestaware pieces carry California warning labels for this reason, though they comply with federal standards.

## Melamine: a separate concern

Melamine is a polymer resin used to make lightweight, break-resistant dishes popular for camping, children's tableware, and outdoor use. It is not glazed ceramic and does not contain lead or cadmium. Its risk profile is distinct.

Melamine-formaldehyde resins release both melamine and formaldehyde when exposed to heat and acidic or alkaline foods. The migration is lowest when dishes are used for cool or room-temperature foods and increases significantly with hot liquids and acidic content like tomatoes or citrus. Studies have found measurable melamine migration into hot soups and noodles served in melamine bowls.

The FDA considers melamine cookware generally safe for cold and room-temperature food contact but does not recommend using melamine for hot foods, infant formula, or breast milk. Use melamine dishes for cold or room-temperature foods, avoid microwaving them, and replace them when surface scratches appear.

## How XRF testing works

XRF stands for X-ray fluorescence. The device fires X-rays at a surface; different elements absorb and re-emit energy at characteristic wavelengths, and the detector measures those signatures to identify and quantify elements present in the material. XRF testing is fast, nondestructive, and capable of detecting metals at low concentrations without damaging the object being tested.

Its limitation is that it measures total elemental content in the surface material, not the amount that migrates into food under real conditions. A plate with 20,000 ppm lead in its decal may leach far less than the FDA's 3.0 ppm flatware limit if the glaze layer is intact and food contact is brief. That same plate, chipped and scratched after decades of use, may leach considerably more.

The FDA's leachable limits use a standardized acid soak test to simulate worst-case food contact. XRF results and leach test results are not directly comparable, which is why advocates citing XRF numbers and manufacturers citing leach test compliance are often talking past each other. Both numbers can be true simultaneously.

What XRF does well is flag surfaces worth investigating further and screen large numbers of items quickly. Lead Safe Mama's testing database is valuable precisely because it identified patterns with extremely high total lead content at a scale no academic or regulatory body had prioritized.

## Brands that publish independent test results

Transparency is rare in the dinnerware category. Most brands comply with FDA leachable limits through manufacturers' own certification and do not commission or publish independent third-party testing.

Exceptions worth noting: Xtrema commissions independent third-party heavy-metal leach testing and publishes results, with a ceramic chemistry that targets lead-free and cadmium-free formulations. GreenPan and GreenLife publish FDA compliance statements for their ceramic-coated products, though third-party leach test results are not routinely public. The clearest signal of a genuinely safe modern dish is a combination of disclosed materials (no "proprietary glaze" language), published third-party leach test results meeting current FDA standards, and XRF verification that total lead and cadmium in the food-contact glaze are non-detect or trace.

## What to do with dishes you already have

**Vintage decorated Corelle, pre-2005, with colored patterns.** Treat as decorative. Do not use for food service. The lead levels in the patterns are high enough that handling by small children represents a contact risk that is not worth taking when inexpensive alternatives exist.

**Plain white vintage or contemporary Corelle.** Testing consistently shows no detectable lead or cadmium. Use normally.

**Vintage Fiestaware from before 1986, especially red, orange, and yellow pieces.** Remove from food service. The uranium-era pieces produce detectable radiation; the cadmium-era pieces carry high surface cadmium content. Both categories present handling risks that exceed any culinary value.

**Contemporary Fiestaware from 1986 onward.** Complies with FDA leachable limits. For those in California or those who apply Prop 65-level caution, the warning labels on some pieces reflect the more stringent state standard.

**Chipped or heavily worn dishes of any type.** The damage that exposes the underlying glaze or decal is where the risk concentrates. A chip in the food-contact surface of any ceramic dish is reason to retire it, regardless of age.

**Melamine dishes.** Use for cold and room-temperature foods only. Do not microwave. Replace scratched pieces.
