## Why most deodorants fail this list

The category has a disclosure problem. A product labeled "aluminum-free" can still contain ammonium alum (potassium aluminum sulfate), marketed as a "natural mineral deodorant." A product called "fragrance-free" can list "natural fragrance" as a catch-all ingredient. And baking soda, the workhorse active in many natural deodorants, is a legitimate sensitizer for a meaningful subset of people who switch from antiperspirant.

None of that is a reason to give up on aluminum-free deodorant. It is a reason to read the ingredient list before you buy, which is what we did for this guide.

## What we look for

**No aluminum in any form.** The primary antiperspirant active is aluminum salts: aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex, and their relatives. We exclude all of them. We also exclude ammonium alum (potassium aluminum sulfate), which crystal deodorants often contain and sometimes market as "aluminum-free" because it is a different compound. It is still an aluminum salt that works by temporarily plugging sweat ducts.

**No baking soda for sensitive skin.** Sodium bicarbonate raises underarm pH to inhibit odor-causing bacteria and works well for many people. For a meaningful subset, especially those switching from long-term antiperspirant use, it causes contact dermatitis. We have included both baking soda and baking soda-free options, and we note which applies for each pick.

**No synthetic fragrance.** "Fragrance," "parfum," and "natural fragrance" as catch-alls are out. Named essential oils (lavender oil, lemon essential oil) are fine because the ingredient is named. The majority of our picks are fully fragrance-free. The two that are scented use disclosed essential oil blends only.

**No parabens.** Every pick below is paraben-free. We verified this against the published ingredient list in each case, not marketing claims.

**Full ingredient disclosure.** Every brand on this list publishes the full ingredient deck on its product page. No proprietary blend carve-outs. If you cannot read the complete list before purchasing, we do not include it.

> **How we vet deodorant**
>
> We checked ingredient lists against our standard disqualifier screen: no aluminum in any form (including alum), no synthetic fragrance catch-alls, no parabens, no triclosan. For baking soda, we note it rather than disqualify. Where brands carry third-party certifications (EWG Verified), we confirmed the listed SKU against the certifier database.

## Our picks

### 1. [Attitude Sensitive Natural Deodorant Stick, Unscented](/products/attitude-sensitive-natural-deodorant-stick-unscented)

> **Best overall**
>
> Attitude uses magnesium hydroxide as its odor-control active instead of aluminum or baking soda, which is among the least irritating approaches available. The Sensitive Unscented version carries EWG Verified status, meaning every ingredient has been reviewed against the EWG Skin Deep database. No fragrance. No aluminum. No baking soda. This is the pick we start with for anyone coming off a conventional antiperspirant.

The [Attitude Sensitive Deodorant Stick](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/attitude-sensitive-natural-deodorant-stick-unscented) uses magnesium hydroxide as the odor-control mechanism: it adjusts underarm pH to inhibit odor-causing bacteria without the inflammation risk that aluminum salts or baking soda carry. The EWG Verified mark requires every ingredient to be disclosed and reviewed against the EWG Skin Deep database.

The formula is short: magnesium hydroxide, tapioca starch, shea butter, and a few plant-derived emollients. Made in Canada.

**Price:** $12.95 on the Attitude site. **Format:** solid stick, 3 oz.

### 2. [Necessaire The Deodorant, Fragrance Free](/products/necessaire-the-deodorant-fragrance-free)

The [Necessaire The Deodorant Fragrance Free](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/necessaire-the-deodorant-fragrance-free) treats deodorant as a skincare product. The actives are niacinamide (a form of vitamin B3 that reduces odor-causing bacteria and supports skin barrier function) and AHAs (which manage the skin microenvironment where odor originates). No aluminum, no baking soda, no fragrance, no parabens.

The gel-serum texture applies like a skincare product and dries clear. The fragrance-free version has zero scenting agents. The full ingredient list is published on the Necessaire site.

**Price:** $24. **Format:** gel-serum stick, 2.5 oz.

### 3. [Kosas Chemistry AHA Serum Deodorant, Fragrance Free](/products/kosas-chemistry-aha-deodorant-fragrance-free)

The [Kosas Chemistry AHA Serum Deodorant](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/kosas-chemistry-aha-deodorant-fragrance-free) leads with mandelic acid as the primary active. Mandelic acid is an AHA with a larger molecular size than glycolic acid, which means it penetrates more slowly and is generally better tolerated on reactive skin. It works by lowering underarm pH to inhibit odor-causing bacteria.

No aluminum, no baking soda, no synthetic fragrance. The fragrance-free version has no scenting agents. Kosas publishes the full ingredient list on the product page.

**Price:** $20. **Format:** serum stick, 2.1 oz.

### 4. [Each & Every Natural Deodorant, Lavender & Lemon](/products/each-and-every-deodorant-lavender-lemon)

The [Each & Every Natural Deodorant](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/each-and-every-deodorant-lavender-lemon) is one of two scented picks on this list. The scenting is fully disclosed: lavender oil and lemon essential oil, named individually in the ingredient deck. It carries EWG Verified status, which requires the full ingredient list to be reviewed against the EWG Skin Deep database.

The formula uses coconut oil and candelilla wax as the base, with no aluminum, no baking soda, and no synthetic fragrance catch-alls.

**Price:** $22. **Format:** solid stick, 2.5 oz.

### 5. [Native Deodorant Stick, Unscented](/products/native-deodorant-stick-unscented)

The [Native Deodorant Unscented](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/native-deodorant-stick-unscented) is widely available at Target, CVS, and major retailers in addition to the brand site, making it the easiest pick to test without a dedicated order. No aluminum, no parabens, no phthalates. The Unscented variant has no fragrance at all.

The base is coconut oil, shea butter, and baking soda. For anyone who reacts to baking soda, the AHA-based options in picks 2 and 3 are the better starting point. For those who tolerate it, Native is reliable and the price is low.

**Price:** $13.99. **Format:** solid stick, 2.65 oz.

### 6. [Lume Whole Body Deodorant Solid Stick, Unscented](/products/lume-whole-body-deodorant-solid-stick-unscented)

The [Lume Whole Body Deodorant](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/lume-whole-body-deodorant-solid-stick-unscented) is formulated to work anywhere on the body, not just underarms. The mechanism is acidic pH control: the formula keeps skin slightly acidic to inhibit the bacteria responsible for body odor. No aluminum, no baking soda. The Unscented version has no fragrance ingredients.

Lume publishes its full ingredient list. The price point is higher than most picks here, but the whole-body application scope distinguishes it from the rest of the list.

**Price:** $15. **Format:** solid stick.

### 7. [Humble Brands Simply Unscented Deodorant](/products/humble-brands-simply-unscented-deodorant)

The [Humble Brands Simply Unscented Deodorant](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/humble-brands-simply-unscented-deodorant) uses a beeswax and plant oil base with arrowroot powder for moisture absorption. No aluminum, no synthetic fragrance, and no baking soda in the Simply Unscented version. The ingredient list is short and every item on it is recognizable.

This is the pick for someone who wants the simplest possible formula.

**Price:** around $8. **Format:** solid stick, 2.5 oz.

### 8. [Tom's of Maine Aluminum Free Natural Deodorant, Unscented](/products/toms-of-maine-deodorant-unscented)

The [Tom's of Maine Unscented Deodorant](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/toms-of-maine-deodorant-unscented) is available at most major drugstores and grocery chains, which makes it the most accessible pick on this list. No aluminum, no artificial fragrances, no artificial preservatives, and no dyes. Tom's publishes the complete ingredient list on the product page and on the label.

The active is hops (Humulus lupulus), which creates a mildly acidic environment on the skin surface. The formula also contains propylene glycol as a humectant, which is disclosed in the ingredient deck.

**Price:** around $8. **Format:** solid stick, 3.25 oz.

### 9. [Primally Pure Charcoal Deodorant, 1.7 oz](/products/primally-pure-charcoal-deodorant): Best tallow-based formula

The [Primally Pure Charcoal Deodorant](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/primally-pure-charcoal-deodorant) takes a different approach to odor control: activated charcoal and non-nano zinc oxide absorb odor-causing moisture and bacteria without aluminum or synthetic fragrances. The base uses grass-fed tallow and beeswax rather than shea butter, giving the stick a firmer texture and a drier feel on application.

One thing to know before buying: the formula contains baking soda, which can cause underarm irritation in some people. If baking soda is a trigger for you, the Humble Brands Sensitive pick in this guide is baking soda-free. The formula also contains tallow and beeswax, so it is not vegan.

**Price:** see brand site for current pricing. **Format:** solid stick, 1.7 oz.

## What we passed on

**Crystal deodorant and mineral salt sticks** (including brands like Thai Crystal and Naturally Fresh) are often marketed as the most minimal aluminum-free option, but most contain ammonium alum (potassium aluminum sulfate), which is still an aluminum salt. The mechanism is the same as conventional antiperspirant, just with a different compound.

**Dove 0% Aluminum** is widely available and has been updated to remove aluminum, but lists "fragrance" as a catch-all without naming the components. That is a disqualifier under our fragrance rule.

**Kopari Aluminum-Free Deodorant** was on our shortlist but lists "fragrance" in the ingredient deck without disclosing the constituents.
