## Why Body Wash Warrants a Closer Look

Most body washes are water, surfactants, and fragrance. The surfactant lathers and rinses clean; the fragrance signals cleanliness. Both categories carry the highest ingredient risk in personal care.

The central concern is ethoxylated surfactants, particularly sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). Ethoxylation adds ethylene oxide to a fatty alcohol, making the resulting molecule gentler on skin. The problem is that ethylene oxide reacts with itself during processing and leaves 1,4-dioxane as a contaminant. It is not on the ingredient list because it is a byproduct, not an added ingredient. Independent testing by EWG has found detectable 1,4-dioxane in a significant share of body washes tested. Switching to non-ethoxylated surfactants (glucosides, betaines, sarcosinates, saponified oils) eliminates the concern at the source.

Fragrance is the second screen. "Fragrance" or "parfum" as a single line item is a trade-secret exemption that covers hundreds of undisclosed compounds, including phthalates used as fixatives. Every pick in this guide either discloses no fragrance at all or names the specific essential oil by its INCI name.

Parabens and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives round out the main concerns. Parabens mimic estrogen at low doses. Formaldehyde releasers (DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, bronopol) off-gas slowly in water-based formulas. Both are avoidable without sacrificing shelf life.

## What We Look For

**Surfactants.** No SLES, no ethoxylated surfactants ("-eth-" names, PEGs, polysorbates). Coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside, sodium cocoyl glutamate, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, cocamidopropyl betaine, and saponified plant oils all pass.

**Fragrance.** No "fragrance," "parfum," or "natural fragrance" as a catchall. Named essential oils, listed individually by INCI name, are fine.

**Preservatives.** No parabens (methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butylparaben), no formaldehyde releasers (DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, bronopol).

**Dyes.** No artificial colorants (FD\&C or D\&C lakes).

**Disclosure.** Every ingredient named. No proprietary blends.

**Verification.** EWG Verified screens for all of the above using a restricted ingredient list of over 2,500 substances and audits each formula independently. Seven of the eight picks carry EWG Verified status. The eighth (Plaine Products) was reviewed manually against the same criteria.

> If the fragrance source is not named, neither are the chemicals carrying it. Every pick here either lists no fragrance or names the specific essential oil.

* 7 of 8 picks are EWG Verified (independently screened against 2,500+ restricted ingredients)

* 0 ethoxylated surfactants (across all eight formulas)

## Our Eight Picks

### 1. [Branch Basics Concentrate](/products/branch-basics-concentrate): Best for households that go through a lot of product

The [Branch Basics Concentrate](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/branch-basics-concentrate) is a multi-use soap that works as body wash when diluted at a ratio of roughly one part concentrate to three parts water. One bottle yields the equivalent of around 16 bottles of body wash, which puts the per-use cost well below any other pick here. The formula is EWG Verified, MADE SAFE certified, and Leaping Bunny approved.

The ingredient list contains no synthetic surfactants. Cleansing comes from saponified coconut and olive oils, coco-glucoside, and sodium citrate. No synthetic fragrance, no dyes, no parabens. The trade-off is the dilution step: this is better suited for people comfortable refilling a foamer bottle than for grab-and-go use.

> **Best for multi-use households**
>
> One bottle covers body wash, hand soap, dish soap, and general cleaning. The concentrate format reduces plastic by roughly 90% compared to single-use product bottles, and the formula is among the cleanest on this list.

### 2. [Everyone 3-in-1 Soap, Unscented](/products/everyone-3-in-1-soap-unscented): Best value pick

The [Everyone 3-in-1 Soap in Unscented](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/everyone-3-in-1-soap-unscented) is the most affordable pick on the list, retailing around $13 for 32 oz. The formula is EWG Verified and built around coco-glucoside, a sugar-derived surfactant with no ethoxylation concerns. No synthetic fragrance, no dyes, no parabens.

It functions as body wash, shampoo, or bubble bath, making it practical for families or anyone looking to consolidate bathroom products. EO Products, the brand behind the Everyone line, has maintained EWG Verified status for this product across multiple formula reviews. Amazon sells it as a 2-pack (64 oz total).

### 3. [Avalon Organics Lavender Bath and Shower Gel](/products/avalon-organics-revitalizing-lavender-shower-gel): Best scented pick under $20

The [Avalon Organics Lavender Bath and Shower Gel](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/avalon-organics-revitalizing-lavender-shower-gel) is the scented option for readers who want a named essential oil at a drugstore price point. It is EWG Verified and NSF/ANSI 305 certified, which covers personal care products made with organic ingredients. The scent comes from organic lavender essential oil, listed by its INCI name.

The formula uses cocamidopropyl betaine and sodium cocoyl glutamate as its primary surfactants: both are non-ethoxylated and amino acid-derived. Available on Amazon in 32 oz.

### 4. [Dr. Bronner's Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Liquid Soap](/products/dr-bronners-baby-unscented-castile-soap): Best scent-free castile formula

The [Dr. Bronner's Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Soap](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/dr-bronners-baby-unscented-castile-soap) has nine ingredients: water, saponified organic coconut oil, organic palm oil, organic olive oil, organic hemp seed oil, organic jojoba oil, sodium gluconate, citric acid, and tocopherol. That is the complete list. No synthetic surfactants, no synthetic fragrance, no dyes, no preservatives beyond tocopherol.

EWG Verified, Regenerative Organic Certified (covering the oil supply chain from farm to bottle), and Fair Trade. Suitable for sensitive skin and young children given the unscented formula. The 32 oz bottle runs about $17 on Amazon.

### 5. [ATTITUDE Sensitive Skin Body Wash, Unscented](/products/attitude-sensitive-skin-body-wash-unscented): Best for SLES-specific concerns

The [ATTITUDE Sensitive Skin Body Wash](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/attitude-sensitive-skin-body-wash-unscented) is built around decyl glucoside and coco-glucoside, two sugar-derived surfactants with no ethoxylation concerns. EWG Verified and Leaping Bunny certified. At under $13 on Amazon and available at major retailers, it is the easiest pick to find in stock.

No synthetic fragrance, no dyes, no SLES. The Canadian brand makes its full ingredient list publicly available and has maintained EWG Verified status since 2021. The 16 oz size is the standard retail format.

### 6. [Plaine Products Unscented Body Wash](/products/plaine-products-unscented-body-wash): Best for plastic-free households

The [Plaine Products Unscented Body Wash](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/plaine-products-unscented-body-wash) arrives in a refillable aluminum bottle. The refill program works by mailing back the empty bottle, which Plaine Products sterilizes and refills. The formula has seven ingredients: water, coco-glucoside, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, glycerin, panthenol, xanthan gum, and potassium sorbate. No synthetic fragrance, no ethoxylated surfactants, no parabens.

EWG Verified, Leaping Bunny certified, and a certified B Corp. At $33 per bottle, the upfront cost is higher than most picks; the refill model reduces per-use cost over the life of the bottle.

### 7. [Seven Minerals EWG Verified Castile Soap, Unscented](/products/seven-minerals-castile-soap-unscented): Best palm-oil-free castile

The [Seven Minerals EWG Verified Castile Soap](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/seven-minerals-castile-soap-unscented) is a nine-ingredient liquid castile soap: purified water, organic coconut oil, potassium hydroxide, organic olive oil, organic castor oil, organic argan oil, organic jojoba oil, organic hemp oil, and organic vegetable glycerin. No palm oil, no fragrance, no preservatives, no dyes.

EWG Verified. The castor oil addition sets it apart from the Dr. Bronner's Baby formula above: castor oil produces a noticeably thicker lather and higher viscosity, so the soap works directly on skin without dilution. The oil profile is also more diverse, with argan, jojoba, and hemp alongside the base coconut and olive, and no palm oil in any form.

At $16.95 for 33.8 oz on Amazon, it is one of the better per-ounce values among the EWG Verified picks here. Made in the USA.

### 8. [Dr. Bronner's Lavender Pure-Castile Liquid Soap](/products/dr-bronners-lavender-castile-soap): Best lavender pick with a named essential oil

The [Dr. Bronner's Lavender Pure-Castile Soap](https://nontoxicnook.com/products/dr-bronners-lavender-castile-soap) uses the same nine-ingredient base as the Baby Unscented, plus organic lavender essential oil, listed by its INCI name. No synthetic fragrance compounds, no proprietary blends. EWG Verified, Regenerative Organic Certified, and Fair Trade.

For readers who want a scented option and are comfortable with the castile format (it lathers best with a washcloth rather than applied directly), this is the closest to the Baby formula without forgoing scent. Same price: about $17 for 32 oz on Amazon.

## What We Passed On

**Dove Sensitive Skin Body Wash** uses sodium laureth sulfate as its primary surfactant. The 1,4-dioxane concern is direct. Failed on the SLES screen.

**Method Pure Peace Body Wash** lists "fragrance" without disclosing constituent compounds. Failed on the undisclosed-fragrance screen despite the "clean" positioning.

**SheaMoisture Raw Shea Butter Body Wash** disclosed fragrance as a catchall in the ingredient list at the time of our review. Failed on the same screen.
